In Portfolio, what is the difference between "Holdings" and "Transactions" view?

  • Holdings displays a combined view of your purchases (five purchases of 100 shares displays 500 shares)
  • Transactions view breaks out each individual transaction (five purchases of 100 shares would appear as five Buy transactions)
  • Transactions view allows search by date and transactions type
  • Transaction view is completely new to the recent software update

There is an error in my Portfolio holdings how can this be corrected?

  • Thank you for your patience with this migration we are happy to help you investigate any possible issues and make the necessary corrections.
  • Please notify us of your concerns we will investigate. Click: https://globeandmail.happyfox.com/new and select “Category > Investment Tools” and “Investment Tools > Portfolio Inquiry”
  • Every transaction you entered over time is backed-up and we are confident we can work to correct any possible issue you raise.

Is the total value of my Portfolio different than what was displayed in the old tools?

  • We have gone to great measures to ensure the fidelity of your data migration
  • Each Portfolio entry you have created is stored and used to recreate your Portfolio in the new tool on a transaction-by-transaction basis
  • This process is anonymized
  • If at any time you have a concern with Portfolio valuation we are able to investigate as every action you have take (Buy/Sell) is recorded
  • Due to the complexity of corporate action events (name changes, graduations, splits) it is possible that a mapping was not done correctly
  • In some cases a difference could arise due to changes calculation or valuation methods
  • Please notify us of your concerns we will investigate. Click: https://globeandmail.happyfox.com/new and select “Category > Investment Tools” and “Investment Tools > Portfolio Inquiry”

In Portfolio there is an option to set an "Account Type" with each Portfolio. What is this?

  • During setup designate your Portfolio as one of the following:
  1. Tax-Free Savings (TFSA)
  2. Retirement Savings (RRSP)
  3. Retirement Income (RRIF)
  4. Education Savings (RESP)
  5. Disability Savings (RDSP)
  6. Individual Retirement Account (IRA)
  7. Taxable (Cash)
  8. Other Assets
  • For an older Portfolio click "Edit Portfolio" to add this label
  • This will not enforce any transaction types within the Portfolio but rather is for your reference (Example: selecting "Other Assets" still allows you to purchase stocks)

How are dividends and distributions handled?

  • You can choose to reinvest a dividend or distribution to purchase more shares or funds in the future (simulating a DRIP or fund)
  • In a "Cash Balance" account you can deposit dividends or distributions to your cash balance rather than reinvest, or they can be used to purchase more shares/funds
  • In a "No Cash Balance" account you will still see a record of a dividend payment against the underlying security (in the Transaction History logs) but the cash isn't placed anywhere; if you select Reinvestment additional shares/units will be added
  • When creating a new Portfolio you can choose either “always reinvest” or “don’t reinvest” at point of creation and this will apply to all purchases
  • You always have the ability to over-ride either-way at the individual holdings level (within the "More" button) at the "Holdings" level but not on one individual transaction

What is the difference between "Cash Balance" and "No Cash Balance"?

  • Cash Balance simulates and actual account and provides a more accurate Return on Investment information across the history of your Portfolio
  • No Cash Balance gets you started but will only track the value of your current investment holdings
  • Once a Portfolio is designated Cash or No Cash this cannot be changed at a later date

What exchange rate is applied when converting US holdings into a Total Assets?

  • The latest CAD/USD exchange rate used in the calculation is posted at the bottom of each page with the Portfolio
  • The Portfolio tool maintains separate cash accounts for Canadian and US currencies. All assets are traded using the default currency of the exchange that they trade on.
  • Assets traded on Canadian exchanges (e.g. TSX) are traded in Canadian funds, while assets traded on US exchanges (e.g. NYSE) use the USD as their trading currency.
  • Currency conversion only ever occurs when the system is calculating a value for display.
  • This currency conversion uses the current, real-time FOREX USDCAD quote.
  • Examples of values that use the real-time USDCAD FOREX are the Portfolio summary values (market value, cost basis, unrealized and realized gains, and % of Portfolio)

In Portfolio what is meant by a "Position"?

  • If you see the option to "Add/Delete/Close" Position under the more button this means to add, delete or sell a collection of stock or fund purchases
  • Five purchases of 100 shares is a "position" of 500 shares
  • What default filters are setup to view data with Portfolio?
  • Portfolio: an overall view of your Profit and Loss
  • Price Performance: market data pricing over various time periods for your holdings
  • Annual: how your holdings performed over yearly periods
  • My Shares: how your holdings are performing during a trading day

Everything in my Portfolio is incorrect how can this be restored?

  • Thank you for your patience with this migration we are happy to help you investigate any possible issues and make the necessary corrections.
  • Please notify us of your concerns we will investigate. Click: https://globeandmail.happyfox.com/new and select “Category > Investment Tools” and “Investment Tools > Portfolio Inquiry”
  • Every transaction you entered over time is backed-up and we are confident we can work to correct any possible issue you raise.
  • Please note that over-time The Globe and Mail has supported three separate investment tools and it is possible you created a Portfolio in a legacy tool with the same name as the Portfolio you maintained in Globe Investor Gold.

After product migration I see Portfolios created with no associated holdings - can my data be restored?

  • In Portfolio we do not migrate positions with no holdings.
  • If you created a Buy for RY-T with holdings=0 this will not be imported into the new tool.
  • This indicates you do not own this security and are only interested in following it (a Watchlist function).
  • If you would like to request this data for the purposes of creating a Watchlist, visit https://globeandmail.happyfox.com/new and select “Category > Investment Tools” and “Investment Tools > Portfolio Inquiry” to outline your request.

Why do I see a "-new" suffix after a Portfolio entry?

  • Over the years Globe Investor supported several versions of the Portfolio in tandem
  • If you created a Portfolio in more than one tool with the same name a "-new" was added to help you differentiate
  • An example would be "Dividend Stocks" and "Dividend Stocks-new"
  • Click "Edit Portfolio” to change the name or delete
  • Examples of Portfolio tools include Globe Investor, Globe Basic and Globe Investor Gold

Is it possible I am missing a Mutual Fund after you converted my account?

  • The Globe and Mail now uses Fundata to provide Mutual Fund pricing
  • The data coverage with our new vendor is considerably greater but it is possible we don't carry a missing fund
  • Please notify us of this omission and we will investigate. Click: https://globeandmail.happyfox.com/new and select “Category > Investment Tools” and “Investment Tools > Financial Data Inquiry”
  • Note: only Canadian Mutual Funds are supported
